Location: 80km north-east of Emerald
Area: 98km2
Target: open cut semi-soft coking coal and underground coal
EPC: 1545, 1567
Ownership: 100% Stanmore Coal
Targeting open cut semi-soft coking coal
– the area is primarily being targeted for the potential development of Collinsville Coal Measures equivalent (Liskeard Seam) which may contain a semi-soft coking coal.
The Liskeard seam is likely to outcrop/subcrop through EPC 1545 and present as a shallow target.
A further exploration target has been identified at the bottom of the Back Creek Group in the form of a “Blair Athol” style deposit. If present, the deposit would be found at a depth of 250-350 metres.
Close to infrastructure
– the railway servicing mines in the area (such as Oaky Creek and German Creek) passes along the south-eastern boundary, providing access to both the Gladstone and Mackay ports.
Exploration History and Geology
The principal exploration target is the potential development of the Liskeard Seam within the sediments of the Back Creek Group (Freitag Formation) as occurs elsewhere in the Bowen Basin. A geological review suggests that, if present and of a suitable thickness, the Liskeard Seam is likely to subcrop/outcrop through EPC 1545 and present as a shallow target. This concept has not been fully tested and there are no data on the nature and quality of the coal within the exploration tenements, although elsewhere the seam is up to 1.7metres thick and of moderate ash. There is the possibility of a number of thicker seams.
Blair Athol style deposits occur in Early Permian sequences, initial work will focus on confirming the presence of Permian sediments above the granite basement. This is typically done by analysing geophysical datasets for magnetic and gravity lows that might reflect areas of thicker, structurally preserved Early Permian sedimentary sequence.
The permit also covers a portion of the German Creek Coal Measures and some exploration will be targeted at this formation to establish whether a shallow coal deposit may be identified in this area.
